PLEASE HELP, What can I eat/drink to get rid of this phlegm in my throat?
So I have a musical showcase to do in two weeks, but I always have this phlegm in my throat (I also have a nasal accent sometimes and can never fully breath clearly). For this reason I have voluntarily been an alto throughout rehearsals, but now I have to sing “Notice Me, Horton” and I can’t hit high notes because every time I try to switch from chest to head voice, the phlegm gets all in the way and I sound like a dying cat. Same goes for when I try to use falsetto. Are there any foods or drinks I can have on hand to get rid of this mucus both for practice and on the “big day”? I’m not really into taking over the counter drugs because I’m already on six different medications for a health condition I’ve got, so natural stuff would be best.
And I know dairy causes mucus, but I can’t stop eating dairy because I need a high calcium diet for one of the meds I’m taking which causes bone deterioration.
Thanks.
You’re doing the Seussical?! That’s awesome! I didn’t sing in it, but I did play the clarinet parts for the instrumental, and my brother and I did the sound effects. My best friend also played the part of Gertrude, so I know how all the songs go! How exciting!
Anyway, are you sick? It’s probably just a matter of having a slight cold, but not to the point where you’re feeling sick.
Just for a little while, I think you should avoid dairy. It causes a tremendous amount of mucus that will add up in your performance. You’re drinking the milk for the calcium? Talk to your doctor about substituting that (at least for a little while) with a multivitamin that has calcium in it.
I don’t believe there are any foods that will help you. Acid (from an orange or lemon) can clear the throat temporarily, but it might irritate your throat to the point that mucus will build up even more.
I don’t know if this works, but I have heard that people do it before: drinking olive oil. Sounds disgusting, I know, right? But it can work as a lubricant for your throat, and olive oil is not a bad fat because it doesn’t clog your arteries.
If that sounds too exotic to you, try drinking a mixture of slightly-hotter-than-warm water with salt. Salt’s a wondrous thing that can be used to clean out whatever is in your throat–though the taste will undoubtedly be disgusting. After you drink it, drink a rinse of warm water.
If that doesn’t work for you, you could try that (disgusting) remedy of pouring a mixture of warm water and salt into your nose and letting it run down your throat. It’ll definitely clean your sinuses, but it just sounds like a terrible way to fix yourself.
Avoid sports drinks and sodas, and I might even say to avoid fruit juice. Stick with water, and try to drink about a half-cup every hour. You need the hydration, and it might loosen up your throat a bit.
I hope this helps, but… I’m sorry if it’s just disgusting.
